Overview
  The Office of the General Counsel
 
The Office of the General Counsel provides a wide variety of legal services to Barnard College, including but not limited to Contract negotiation and drafting, Government Compliance, Real Estate, and Employment and Labor Law.
The General Counsel serves as the College's chief legal officer, and performs the following functions:
·         provides general legal counsel to the President, the College's other officers, and the Board of Trustees, and advises on the legal ramifications of College policy and decision-making. 
·         performs the traditional functions associated with in-house counsel including the negotiation of contracts; advice on human resource matters; review of relevant state, federal and local laws and regulations, and provides the functions of a general-practice law.
·         engages and supervises the work of outside law firms, taking into account both the nature of the services they can provide and the fees they charge. Once engaged, the General Counsel insures that services are provided in a manner that serves the College's interest.
The Office's objectives are to advance the mission of the College, and to provide useful and timely legal advice in support of that mission.
Legal Internship Position Description
Legal interns will receive one-on-one supervision of their legal work by the Office of the General Counsel. Legal interns are not compensated by Barnard College for their internships. We strive to offer a fun and intellectually-challenging legal intern experience that supports and supplements the vital advocacy offered by the College. Students must have completed their first year in law school prior to the start of the internship. In addition, students may not have graduated law school prior to the start of the internship (i.e. students must still be enrolled in law school during the time of the internship).
The General Counsel’s office is currently seeking interns for the Spring 2012 and Summer 2012 semester. The Spring 2012 hours will be approximately 5 – 10 hours (flexible schedule) and the Summer 2012 hours will be a minimum of 20 hours (flexible schedule).
 
The ideal candidate will help prepare legal documents, correspondence, research and writing, summarize documents and other projects as assigned.
 
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
·         Must be enrolled in law-school, preferably having completed the first year.
·         Must have an undergraduate degree.
·         Excellent legal writing, research, analytical, and communication skills.
·         Must be self-motivated and demonstrate the initiative and determination to see projects through to completion.
·         Must be detail-oriented and enjoy analytical and written document work. 
·         Must have a commitment to accuracy. 
·         Must be enthusiastic and flexible.
·         Must have good computer skills including Word and Excel.
·         Proof of credit eligibility will be required.
