Adam Hemlock is a partner in the Firm’s Antitrust Practice Group, where he represents clients in a variety of antitrust and commercial litigation matters.
Mr. Hemlock specializes in representing clients in cartel matters. He has handled internal investigations of clients involving potential cartel conduct, including the navigation of the ethics, securities and privilege issues that arise in the course of such investigations. He has defended clients under criminal investigation by the United States Department of Justice, and also has experience coordinating multinational cartel defense in jurisdictions including the European Union, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Korea, and Brazil. Mr. Hemlock has also defended clients in United States cartel class action lawsuits and the particular issues that arise in such litigation, including personal jurisdiction, the Foreign Trade Antitrust Improvements Act, class certification and others. Additionally, he has defended clients in private, non-class action antitrust litigation’s.
Mr. Hemlock also has substantial experience in the antitrust/intellectual property area. He has litigated cases and provided counseling on the antitrust legality of patent pools, standard setting bodies, and technology transactions among competitors. He has worked in this area on behalf of clients in a variety of industries, including semiconductors, optical discs, memory cards, powerline broadband, pharmaceuticals, cable boxes, mobile telephones, wireless telecom protocols, flat panel displays, rechargeable batteries, retina scan software, and Internet video distribution. He has been recognized in Chambers USA 2013 and Legal 500 2013 in the Antitrust space.
Mr. Hemlock has represented numerous clients in merger counseling and government investigations. He handles merger notifications under the Hart-Scott-Rodino (HSR) Act and coordinates filings in multiple jurisdictions. He also coordinates multiple competition investigations across the world and has experience in negotiating favorable remedies in the US. In addition to his work in the antitrust area, Mr. Hemlock has represented clients in various commercial dispute matters, including complex commercial litigation and alternative dispute resolution procedures.
He has particular experience representing foreign clients in US legal proceedings.
Mr. Hemlock also has extensive experience representing Japanese clients. He was seconded from Weil from March 1998 through May 2000 to serve in Japan as senior legal counsel for Panasonic. At Panasonic, Mr. Hemlock represented the company in many aspects of international law, focusing
primarily on the areas of intellectual property, antitrust and commercial agreements. Mr. Hemlock works extensively with Japanese clients, and has strong familiarity with the Japanese business environment. He visits Japan frequently and speaks basic Japanese.
Mr. Hemlock has worked on behalf of many major domestic and foreign clients, including Panasonic, Victor Company of Japan (JVC), Toray Industries, Kyowa Hakko Kogyo, General Chemical Corp., Polyplastics, Vantec, American Airlines, Telecom Italia, Medpointe, Houghton Mifflin Riverdeep, Sharp,
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC), Texas Instruments, Perricone, Reuters, Denak, Iridian, DirecTV, Hughes Aircraft, Sumitomo Chemical, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and others.
Mr. Hemlock is currently the Vice-Chair of the Intellectual Property Committee of the ABA Antitrust Section. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Practicing Attorneys for Law Students Program, Inc., a member of the New York City Bar Association Committee on Minorities in the Profession and a
leader of Latinos@Weil, the Firm’s Hispanic affinity group. He heads the Firm’s Asylum Practice Team and routinely represents asylum applicants in administrative proceedings before the Department of Homeland Security and in federal courts.
While at law school, Mr. Hemlock served as a legal intern at the Federal Trade Commission, where he worked on several antitrust and consumer protection investigations. He has authored numerous articles on antitrust law and has guest lectured at the Practicing Law Institute, Fordham Law
School, the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and other venues.
